No Self is a monumental landscape and burial design project that unfolds through the universal precepts of Buddhism. In the contemplation of Buddhism’s ALL DHARMAS HAVE NO SELF. The industrial history of the Shiyading mine site in Guangzhou is dismantled into the will to live of specific individuals, restoring the diminished scale of life of the workers in the giant wheel of modernisation.
By combining the historical monumental landscape with the narrative of tree burial, the project attempts to break the single definition of life expression and life course, and through the narrative of the life of the tree as the next stage of the deceased’s life. Through the transformation of life, different lives form the INFINITE I. It explores the all-encompassing nature of Mahatman while affirming the value of each life.
Inspired by the idea of the cycle of life and the connection between one life and the next, the project places a parametric-skin tower in the centre of the pit. This guides the connection between heaven and earth and life with an upright block, and the tower becomes a means of expression to describe the endlessness and longevity of life. The pit’s mountain stacks are connected to the circular platforms, and the recurring loops of life roam or are anchored in the landscape, helping to strip away ideas and human life forms and integrate them into the life of the Mahatman.
